Used in Port Moresby by 1OTU 23/11/42 to 17/12/42 with 14 other Hudsons as part of Special Transport Flight. As one of three Hudson on supply missions that day(with A16-1 and A16-127), A16-36 crashed 1 and a half miles north of Jumbori, Papua by ground fire while dropping supplies at 1515Hrs on the 15/12/42. The Hudson had completed three sorties to and from Soputa to drop ammunition to Australian troops fighting in the area that day and was on its fourth flight (Took off at 1425Hrs). On this supply run, the aircraft was seen banking away from Supota Strip at 100feet after dropping supplies. It then nosed up another 100feet and then dived into the trees near the strip. Australian Army personel were seen running to the wreck site. Three of the crew, Sqn Ldr W A Pedrina Serv#264, F/O D B Kerr Serv#416341 and Sgt A R Itzerote Serv#40750 were killed when the plane crashed and burst into flames. F/Sgt Leo Charles Callaghan serv#300400 was the turret gunner whom Australian Commandos pulled out of the wreck. F/Lt Cornwall, Captain of A16-1, did not see any AAA Fire. Callaghan in 3MSR Hospital in MOresby on the 17/12/42 was interviewed by Sqn Ldr O Hall, the 1OTU Detachment Commander, and stated that following a burst from below, Pedrina had stated that he was hit and then the aircraft crashed. Callaghan remembered nothing more of that day post crash. Local Military Authories stated to Sqn Ldr O Hall on the 17/12/42 that A16-36 was shot down. |

When pulling out of highspeed shallow dive at 80 feet and some 200yards down from the camera, the starboard wing failed at wing station # 144, causing part of the outer wing (3 feet from engine) and spar to separate from the aircraft, with the aircraft then rolling inverted, causing a further failure of the tail plane, with the aircraft then crashing into the ground and exploding. The crew, Sqn Ldr P C Tampion Serv#349, Cpl H P Smith Serv#17024, LAC A P Thomas Serv#13975 and LAC N L Cheshire Serv#49572 all killed instantly. The starboard wing panel was sent to the CSIR for metallurgy inspection. The finding was that the mainplanes had been repaired per then accepted practices, but had failed in flight where numerous patched repairs were made during its overhaul at 5AD. The report stated that many Hudsons withdrawn from operational service and used in 1OTU had been flown to the limits with resultant heavy loadings on their wings on operational service. All simular houred Hudsons were inspected some found to have similiar problems, which would result in their replacement by GAF Beauforts in the near future in operational squadrons. |

Following A16-98 on a North Westerly bearing, A16-39 was observed some twenty miles behind, when A16-39 changed its bearing to the West. Both A16-98 and A16-222 landed with light rain falling at Bairnsdale, some 45 miles from the last point A16-39 was seen by A16-98. Despite DF Bearings given no radio reply was ever heard from A16-39. At 2005hrs a Farmer, MrJohn Cameron of LongPoint, near Lake Reeve / Lake Wellington, some 30 miles south south west of Bairnsdale, heard a low flying aircraft over his roof , followed by a crash. The Hudson had impacted on a nose angle of between 40 and 50 degrees and caught fire only 500 yards from his south easterly facing verandah. It appeared that the starboard engine was stopped in flight due to mechanical problems with the aircraft flying on the remaining Port engine at the time of the crash. The Crash board declared that the aircraft crashed whilst in a stall spin. |
