  • A85-433CA25-33Delivered 08/56. Crashed 06/61, Point Cook VIC. It was being flown by an Army cadet and an RAAF instructor. Apparently the engine failed soon after take-off and the pilots attempted to regain the airfield. However the aircraft stalled and crashed on the airfield. Sadly, the engine broke away, passing under the fuselage and rupturing the fuselage fuel tank which quickly caught fire and probably caused the deaths of the crew. New trainees were shown the gouges in the ground where the aircraft struck to remind us to try to land straight ahead in the event of engine failure on take-off and never to try to turn back to the airfield.

The paint scheme was not subsequently adopted for fleet wide use, 443 was the only Winjeel to use that paint scheme. In recognition that it looked like a flying Fanta Can, A85-443 was christened 'Fancy Nancy' (Fancy Nancy was the girl on Fanta ads at the time). Finished flying career with RAAF as FAC aircraft with 76 Sqn in 1994. Was flying as VH-XRA. It was acquired by Sandora Aviation for restoration. It was re-engined and repainted with permission from the RAAF as A85-404, in silver and orange as operated by 34 Squadron at RAAF Fairbairn in the early 1960's. A blue cheat line and the 34 Squadron crest on the fuselage will make this a slightly different Winjeel in appearance.
