The crew released the dinghy and started to head for shore. The Japanese opened up with machine guns and the first burst killed the observer FLGOFF Sydney Louis Anderson 410192 outright. The second burst holed the dinghy and the three remaining crew started to swim along the dinghy. The third burst of fire collapsed the dinghy completely and killed the pilot FLGOFF Lyle Manhire McLaren 416874 and wounded FLGOFF Ray Graetz 417175 (WAG). Graetz started swimming westward away from the fire and the other WAG FLTSGT Francis Maloney 410995 was last seen swimming seaward. Graetz spent the next 8 days in the jungle trying to return to base when he was rescued. Graetz was awarded the Military Medal for his courage and resource during this adventure.
    A9-572Served with 100 Sqn. Crashed 13/05/44, Tadji PNG. This aircraft had been claimed by one of the flight commanders who was unhappy about losing his aircraft three days after it arrived at the squadron. The aircraft was on a courier mission and when coming into land, it was discovered that the plane was on fire. The pilot ditched into the sea about a mile offshore. The plane broke into half near the rear turret. The crew plus one US soldier(passenger)escaped without injury. Crew; FLGOFF Colin Mcnaughton (pilot), WO Laurie O'Sullivan (navigator), FLGOFF Fred Tolcher (WAG) and Jack Slingo (WAG).
