  • A45-262The first Israeli Aerospace Industries Heron Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UAV was scheduled to be delivered to the RAAF on 10/12/2009 under Project Nankeen. It will be the first of an unspecified number of Herons operated on a lease arrangement from Canadian firm MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates alongside Canadian Herons in support of Australian and coalition security and reconstruction forces in Afghanistan. (The Jerusalem Post specified 10 aircraft)
    Delivered dis-assembled in container to Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan 18/12/2009. Assembled and flying 13/01/2010 as part of Operation Slipper.
    Noted in RAAF photos taken 26/01/2010, 24/07/2010 and 14/04/2011.
    It would appear that the two current aircraft in Rotation 4 (Roto 4) of Australia’s Heron Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) Detachment at Kandahar, Afghanistan are A45-262 and A45-274

    The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported that on 04/06/2010 "A Heron UAV operated by the RAAF crashed short of the airfield at Kandahar, in southern Afghanistan. Replacing the sensor suite cost $1,094,810.38, while the UAV damage assessment bill from Canadian operator MDA was $110,000. Airframe repair costs are reportedly outside of those verified charges."
    A45-265 may have been this aircraft.
