The rear fuselage of Macchi A7-002 is located in the front yard of a house in Bendigo, this could have been an old rear fuselage section. This aircraft was supposed to be located at Northam when all Macchi's were offered for disposal in 2004. One of at least 3 maybe 4 acquired by Dandenong (Vic) RSL to be displayed in formation on poles. Fitted with rear fuselage of A7-048. Currently in storage at an Army depot.

Crashed 07/03/68, Stradbrooke VIC. 14 nm southwest of RAAF East Sale, Vic Aileron control jammed during aerobatics. Pilot ejected at 10,000 ft with only minor injuries. Crew; FLTLT W. Rayner. RAAF Ejection number 32. Aircraft written off 28/06/68, most likely sold for scrap.

    First flight 29/11/67. Delivered 11/12/67. Served with CFS. Crashed 22/07/69 at East Sale, Vic. Suffered an in-flight fire and control failure during a base circuit of East Sale. SQNLDR Newman was able to eject approx 100-200 feet from the ground and the aircraft impacted into the ground before FLGOFF Holsken, who had initiated his ejection seat and could escape. Crew; SQNLDR B. Newman (Pilot), FLGOFF H. Holsken. (Student Instructor). RAAF Ejection number 36.

Crew ejected at between 5,000 and 8,000 ft at low airspeed. Student suffered only minor injuries, aircraft captain suffered moderately severe injuries. Crew; FLTLT W. McAlister, CDT R. Heideman. Another report has it that this airframe is owned by R Schneider of Rupanyup.

Noted at West Sale 10/2005. Acquired by Wellington Shire Council to be mounted on a pole in Sale. We have no details about when and where yet.

Has been allocated to No.25 Sqn (City of Perth) for promotional purposes. Located at RAAF base Pearce awaiting restoration as display aircraft, stored in the open 2003-2005. To be displayed in orange "Fanta-Can" scheme. Noted as fully restored in 2 FTS orange/white colours at the RAAF Pearce airshow 20/11/05.

    A7-030CA30-30First flight 17/10/68. Delivered 04/11/68. Served with CFS/Roulettes, ARDU and 76 Sqn. We believe it was located at Wagga Wagga when the remaining Macchi's were offered for disposal in 2004. This engine-less aircraft is located at Port Wakefield (JPEU) and used for 'indirect' DSTO testing. The aircraft (with removed wings/tail section for storage) is remarkably complete, noted in August 2005. Now owned by the South Australian Aviation Museum. Tail section is from A7-080.

Collided during air combat training on 24/10/94, 38nm (70km) NNE of RAAF Base Williamtown. Crew; FLGOFF M. Connolly ejected with minor injuries. RAAF Ejection number 75.

Recently noted in a hanger on jacks with ejection seat removed. A left wing off -041 is being used in the restoration of Dandenong RSL's Macchis.

It has been suggested that this aircraft crashed while in service with the RAAF, we have no information on that at this time. Currently located at RSTT Wagga Wagga as a fuselage only.

Pilot ejected below 5,000 ft at moderately high speed with only minor injuries. Crew; LEUT D. Roe, RAN. RAAF Ejection number 72.

  • A7-046CA30-46First flight 17/04/69. Delivered 09/05/69. Served with CFS/Part of Roulettes Aerobatic Team 1981, 1983. Collided with A7-093 15/12/83 near East Sale VIC. The Roulettes suffered their first accident when Roulette 2 and Roulette 3 collided at 2,000 feet over the training area new East Sale. The aircraft involved were GAF (Aermacchi) MB.326H A7-046 and A7-093. Flt Lt. Steve Carter (Roulette 2) was believed to have been killed instantly while Flt. Lt. Graeme "Blue" Brooks (Roulette 3) fell from his aircraft as it disintegrated around the pilot. He was able to parachute into a tea tree swamp on the "Lakeview" property. An Esso helicopter medivaced Flt. Lt. Brooks to the Base Medical Flight but unfortunately during treatment he suffered a cardiac arrest and later died in the Gippsland Base Hospital.

During a roulette display with Channel 10 cameraman in chase aircraft, A7-049 (Roulette 4) reared up and struck the underbelly of A7-054 (Roulette 1). Pilot of 049 ejected at 4,000 ft and 200 kts with only minor injuries. Pilot of 054 (Jeff Trappett) performed a wheels-up landing at RAAF East Sale. Crew; FLTLT R. Crispin. RAAF Ejection number 69. The Roulettes were practising for the Canberra Bicentennial Airshow which was scheduled for Sunday 13th March 1988.

Crew ejected at 70-90 ft and 180-200 kts with only minor injuries. Crew were FLTLT Bryan Sweeney and FLGOFF George Clayton. RAAF Ejection number 45.

The Macchi at the Bull Creek Museum painted as A7-025 is really A7-066. A wing from A7-009 was used in this restoration. A pair of wings off -066 are being used in the restoration of Dandenong RSL's Macchis.

A7-074 is now at the Aircraft Battle Damage Repair section at RAAF Williamtown and it is painted matt black with blue flames!

We believe that some parts of the airframe were at RSTT Wagga Wagga when they were offered for disposal in 2004. One of at least 3 maybe 4 acquired by Dandenong (Vic) RSL to be displayed in formation on poles. Fitted with rear fuselage of A7-011. Currently in storage at an Army depot.

Left wing failed in-flight during Air Combat Manouveres approximately 55 nm NE of Williamtown, NSW. FLTLT Page died after he ejected and was then struck by the aircraft. His parachute subsequently did not open and he impacted into the water. RAAF Ejection number 73.

Crew; FLGOFF L. Pulford. RAAF Ejection number 76. A rear fuselage off -088 is reported fitted to -095. This may have been an earlier unit replaced before -088 crashed.

    A7-091CA30-91First Flight 07/03/72. Delivered 23/02/72. Served with 2 FTS. Crashed 19/07/79 (2FTS), 17 nm east northeast of RAAF Pearce, WA Control lost during aerobatics practice. Pilot ejected from inverted spinning aircraft below 5,000 ft with only minor injuries. Crew; CDT R. Allan. RAAF Ejection number 53.
    A7-092CA30-92First flight 04/04/72. Delivered 14/04/72. Served with CFS/Part of Roulettes Aerobatic Team 1988. Richmond Airshow 1988, with CFS/Roulettes. Static display East Sale 1990. A7-070's wings put on this aircraft to keep it airworthy in 1991. (Resulting in a grey aircraft with orange wings). In service 76 Sqn. Fuselage of this aircraft and other wing panels reported as being at Campbellfield near Melbourne, after being in a scrap yard in Seymour Vic. 11/01. Fate unknown.

  • A7-093CA30-93First flight 26/04/72. Delivered 08/05/72. Served with CFS/Part of Roulettes Aerobatic Team 1983. Collided with A7-046 15/12/83, near East Sale VIC. The Roulettes suffered their first accident when Roulette 2 and Roulette 3 collided at 2,000 feet over the training area new East Sale. The aircraft involved were A7-046 and A7-093. Flt Lt. Steve Carter (Roulette 2) was believed to have been killed instantly while Flt. Lt. Graeme "Blue" Brooks (Roulette 3) fell from his aircraft as it disintegrated around the pilot. He was able to parachute into a tea tree swamp on the "Lakeview" property. An Esso helicopter medivaced Flt. Lt. Brooks to the Base Medical Flight but unfortunately during treatment he suffered a cardiac arrest and later died in the Gippsland Base Hospital. Located at RAAF Base at Wagga Wagga NSW March 2006.

    N14-086CA30-86RAN Code 862. Delivered 31/08/71 to 724 Sqn (VC-724). Wore 'Albatross' Tail markings when in RAN service. The 'Admiral's Barge' as it was known "Albatross Tail" Macchi 862 was used firstly like any other RAN Macchi for Fleet Support Duties and continuation training and of course tactical training for new RAN pilots before going on to the A4G Skyhawk. 862 gained the 'albatross tail' to signify that it would be used by VC-724 Squadron Senior Pilot (SP) Lcdr Al Hickling to enable to Captain or CO of HMAS Albatross (NAS Nowra) who was not a pilot, to learn to fly; but not go solo. Captain later Commodore "Nobby" Clarke flew in the front seat with Lcdr Hickling in the rear seat. Re-numbered to A7-086, 30/06/83.
