| N16-098 | WA787 | 901 | First Flight 30/06/74. Previously G-17-1. First RAN Sea King Delivered. Delivered 02/03/75. On board HMAS Melbourne, 'Spithead Deployment' 28/04/77 to 04/10/77 with HS817. Exercise 'Highwood' 5-20 July '77, North Sea VERTREP from RFA Stromness to HMAS Melbourne. Ditched in sea, 23/05/79 90 km East of Jervis Bay after tail rotor failed.Aircraft was performing an anti submarine exercise when the Observer LEUT(O) M Wright RAN reported unusual vibration and noise in the rear of the helo. Pilot elected to return to HMAS Melbourne and as the helo entered hover to land tail rotor control was lost and the aircraft crashed into the sea alonside the carrier.On hitting the sea it turned upside down and began to sink. Delivered 08/04/75.On 10 July 1989 embarked upon HMAS Stalwart where the aircraft was used to ferry the prime Minister Bob Hawke for a visit around the fleet. On 6 August 1989 the aircraft piloted by LEUT(P)A Jankowski RAN & crew ditched, made a water landing, in the sea North of Darwin during exercise Kangaroo 89 due to an engine electrical fault which caused the engine to shut down.The aircraft was at the time conducting an ASW exercise in the hover at 40 feet.They succesfully took off again and landed back on board the frigate HMAS Darwin. The crew commended for their actions by Flag Officer, Australian Fleet.Aboard HMAS Manoora at Christmas Island, 01/09/2001 and at Nauru 16/09/01.On Board HMAS Kanimbla with N16-239 as part of relief operations for Boxing Day 2004 Tsunami.Crashed Fatal at appr 7.30pm (AEST) 2 April 2005 whilst on relief operations on Nias Island, Indonesia.9 Australian Defence Force members killed and 2 injured.Aircraft destroyed.Killed were LEUT M Davey(Doctor)RAN,LEUT M Goodall(O)RAN,LEUT P Kimlin(P)RAN,LEUT J King(P)RAN,P/O S Slattery(Medic)RAN,Leading Seaman S Bennett(ACMN)RAN. RAAF passengers Sqdn Ldr P McCarthy,F/Lt L Rowbottom and Sgt W Jones. |

Delivered 16/04/75.Ditched in sea near Port Kembla at 15.30hrs 15/7/86 after transmission oil loss while conducting an Anti Submarine Exercise with HMAS Adelaide. It capsized in the swells but remained afloat for seven hours. HMAS Adelaide attempted salvage but the ship struck the fuselage and the aircraft sank.LCDR(P)M Town RAN SBLT(P)B Stevenson RAN LEUT(O) N Coulch RAN LEUT(O)J Stutterd RAN and POA Delf rescued. |

Delivered 22/04/75.On 30/11/76 the aircraft ditched in the sea off Kiama after transmission failure.Helo remained afloat for 6 hours then sank during salvage attempt.Crew LT(P) B Costa RAN,LEUT(P) D.A Anderson,RAN LCDR(O) W Kimpton RAN and POA Smith rescued uninjured. |

Participant of the border protection force on Christmas Island 06/2002 to 12/2002. Participant of Exercise Crocodile off Queensland during 09/2003 aboard HMAS Success. RNAS Yeovilton, Somerset UK. 25-28 June '77 to participate in mass flypast for Queens Silver Jubilee celebrations, due to bad weather 07 did not take part. Exercise 'Highwood' 5-20 July '77, North Sea VERTREP from RFA Stromness to HMAS Melbourne. First Sea King to undergo LOTE. Large crack found in fuslage 97? major repairs undertaken. Then the Gulf aboard HMAS Success for 2.5 years. In Timor onboard HMAS Tobruk. Noted with toned down markings 24/02/02. In the Gulf aboard HMAS Kanimbla during 03-04/2003 on operation Bastile/Falconer. On 13 April 2003 with L/CDR Moggach(P)RAN and crew the aircraft suffered an input coupling bearing failure in the main transmission whilst conducting a low level recce sortie over Iraq's Al Faw peninsular.The crew managed to nurse the aircraft 18nm to a Royal Navy base at Az Zubayr where an emergency landing was made.The aircraft had 2 engines and a main rotor gearbox changed in Iraq as a result.Between the 25/2/03 and the 25/3/03 during Operations in the North Arabian Gulf, Shark 07 has flown 112.5 hours. The aircraft was also fitted with a 7.62 mm cabin mounted machine gun with 1000 rounds of link ammunition and armoured seats for the crew. In service with 817 Squadron as Shark 07. |

Crashed into Sea off Cocos Islands on the night of 09/05/77. Pilot LEUT(P)WJ Stone,RAN Co pilot S/LEUT(P)JH Edwards RAN suffered slight injuries. Crashed 500 meters astern of HMAS Melbourne while making a night landing, hit water at about 80 knots and broke up.Crew rescued by HMAS Brisbane. All that was recovered of the helo was a wheel. |

In Timor onboard HMAS Success. Avalon Airshow 2003.On board HMAS Kanimbla with N16-100 and took part in the Boxing day 2004 Tsunami relief effort.Crew of this aircraft observed smoke rising from the crash of N16-100 on Nias Island, Indonesia and flew to the scene where the two survivors were evacuated back to HMAS Kanimbla. First Flight UK 03/04/1979, Delivered RN FAA 06/06/79 under contract A12/1201 as a HAS2, later modified as HAS5 then HU5.Ditched in the Mediterranean Sea on 8/11/85 following loss of main gearbox oil when with 814 Sqdn RN. Purchased as replacement for N16-124. Went through LOTE on delivery to RAN. Delivered 25/06/96. The first Seaking to land on HMAS Manoora for first of type trials. LOTE (life of type extension program) First Seaking N16-118(907) completed LOTE on 23 May 1996 and last aircraft N16-918(922) completed on 7 July 1997 when program successfully wrapped up.This program allows all remaining aircraft to be in service until 2008.
The Seaking celebrated 25 years of service with the RAN on the 2 February 2001.
Seaking Flight was formed in the UK & conversions on type were carried out at RNAS Culdrose,Cornwall.The flight was responsible for the acceptance of the aircraft when they arrived in Australia.
817 Squadron became operational with the aircraft on the 2 february 1976 and the Sea King Flight was paid off.
